Shama was historically a fishing town and so you can take a stroll along the coast and watch the fishermen as they bring in their catch of the day or mend their nets.

Sekond Ghana

Sekondi, the twin city to Takoradi, boasts a bigger fishing harbour and if you get there before 8am, the bustling, colourful fish market is a sight to behold.

The historic European trading Fort San Sebastian is worth a visit and like most of these forts it later became a channel for exporting human slaves to the West.Fort Sebastian

Take an hour’s taxi ride to Cape Coast Castle built by the Portuguese in the 15th century for the export of gold and other resources. Later, it symbolised the gateway through the ‘door of no return’ for one of the worst episodes of human trafficking in the Africa slave trade.

Further afield, Takoradi city centre and port is a 30 minutes taxi drive where you can visit the colourful circular market, buy souvenirs along harbour road, hire a sailing boat or catch a 35 minute flight to the capital city of Accra.  Watch out for the new state of the art Takoradi shopping mall opening in 2017.

A visit by Barrack and Michele Obama in 2009 helped to once again raise public awareness of this darkest of times in West Africa’s history.

A half an hour’s drive from Cape Coast takes you to Kakum National Park run by Ghana Heritage Conservative Trust.

For lovers of nature, wildlife and adventure, why not spend a night camping in Kakum National Park for your chance to see forest elephants, leopards, flying squirrels, monkeys and giant hogs.
